UH - ITS Ask Us Challenge

Introducing Hoku (‘Star’ in Hawaiian), an AI chatbot assistant that is programmed to answer users’ ITS related questions. When the user visits the ITS page, they are greeted with a message from Hoku at the bottom right corner of the website. Automatically, the user knows where to ask questions for their ITS related issues. When the user sends their question to Hoku, Hoku responds to the user with a complete and conversational response in seconds. Our solution provides a 24/7 conversational service to users so that they can receive the assistance that they need.

If the user is not satisfied with Hoku’s response to their question, they can press the icon located at the top right corner of Hoku’s answer, and view the ITS articles and websites that Hoku used to supply her answer.

HPU CMDR - Large Marine Debris Reporting, Dispatching & Documenting Platform

Makai, a mobile-friendly marine debris reporting platform designed for the Center for Marine Debris Research. It is intended for use by both the public and organizations responsible for large debris removal. Makai features a centralized database that stores all incoming debris reports in one place, enabling marine debris researchers to accurately monitor types of debris and debris hotspots.

Makai allows the general public to file debris reports through various methods, including an online form modeled after the current official DOBOR form and calling a 24/7 hotline powered by a conversational AI agent via Google’s Dialogflow CX. Both methods send the report to the database and alert nearby debris removal organizations via email about the new report.

HPU CMDR - Large Marine Debris Reporting, Dispatching & Documenting Platform

Hawaii Pacific University Center for Marine Debris Research (CMDR) – Large Marine Debris Reporting, Dispatching & Documenting Platform. There were 7 steps for this project: Detect, Report & Document, Remove, Transport, Store, Sort, and Repurpose. The challenge sponsor requested a centralized database and dispatch system. My solution currently has a website that allows the public to submit a marine debris report and view all reports. I will continue to work on this project regardless of team selection and hope to get more database and reporting features done this week.

Tyler HI - Affordable Healthcare

Our solution helps uninsured users find affordable healthcare for the services they need. The user is first provided with information on how to use our search engine to find healthcare. For users without insurance, there are affordable healthcare options via Med-QUEST and Federal Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). Med-QUEST insurance covers a large variety of procedures and services, so our website provides users with eligibility information. FQHCs serve medically underserved areas on a “sliding fee scale” that makes care more affordable for people with or without insurance. Users can search based on location of insurance type (Med-QUEST or FQHC), healthcare center name, and type of procedure they need. They will be directed to the matching clinic, its address, contact information, and navigation details to reach the center. For the search function, we compiled a novel database with insurance type, specific doctor contact information, clinic contact information, doctor contact information, and procedures provided using several sources. Additionally, to supplement our database, our application takes reviews on if the user’s procedure was covered at a specific clinic, allowing the procedures users can search by to be more specific.

Tyler HI - Affordable Healthcare

Our solution aims to connect those in need with the services they require. It is essentially a database of healthcare around the islands and the services they provide, under one intuitive and convenient website. We connect patient to caregiver, almost like an Uber for healthcare. Our UI design has been intentionally designed to serve all demographics of tech literacy and guide people through the process of finding care. Our website allows users to easily find the provider that suits their needs, whether that mean it's the cheapest or the most geographically accessible, and directly connecting them to the provider through email. This information is sorted through a user-friendly list-filtering solution. The solution is 100% HIPAA compliant, as we do not store any user data whatsoever.
